Presentation: The Future of Tailings Dam Management through Automation and Digitalisation
The recent collapse of the Brumadinho tailings dam in Brazil is a poignant reminder to the industry that unless there is a firm and widespread commitment to change for the better, that will not be the last. How can the industry leverage innovation, implement and measure technology trials, and integrate them into business-as-usual standards to help prevent future disasters?
Automation technologies and digitalisation are having a profound impact on the mining industry through their ability to satisfy the demand for more data. The future however, is in the way this influx of data can be managed, analysed and leveraged to not only inform but to also predict outcomes.
The emphasis here is two-fold: generating high-quality data and providing it to stakeholders at an increased frequency and transforming subjective, observation-based decision-making to objective, calculated insights. This presentation will focus on the efficiency of automated aerial data capture and the recommended industry best-practices for driving commitment towards a successful implementation and widespread adoption within each mining enterprise. Supported with a case study for the management of tailings dam, we will also identify the key areas where high-frequency aerial data has concrete applications to mitigate operational risks.
